Service Description

Join our 6 Day Timber Frame Building Course starting July 22-27. We will be cutting and raising a 24x30 ft split gable post and beam pavilion at Lionflower Farm. Learn from experienced craftsmen in a supportive and collaborative environment. The days will run from 8am to 4pm with 3 farm to table meals provided. There are a limited amount of rooms available if you are not interested in camping. Evenings can be spent relaxing by the river and making new friends! This workshop is intended for: -Folks who want to learn basic timber frame joinery and gain enough experience to have the confidence to build their own frame -You must have some power tool experience or be willing to learn to use beam saws, circular saws, chain mortisers and routers. -No one will be forced to use power tools and there are many tasks that can be performed at this retreat if you are not comfortable with all of them. Proficiency with power tools takes years and we will not expect you do anything you are not comfortable with. What you will learn: -Layout types and a demonstration on centerline layout(the method we will use) -Choosing and grading timbers for various uses in the frame -Every individual will be trained on power tool usage and safety -You will have the opportunity to hone your chisel skills while learning some tips and tricks on cutting efficiency and reading grain -The frame will be a post and beam structure with two shed roofs. -The joinery will include: mortise and tenon, sloped shoulder housings, spline joints with through splines and various other joinery. Other education demonstrations that we may offer: -Sawmill demonstration focusing on cutting timbers for a frame -Sharpening with wet stones -More in depth demonstration on centerline layout Tools you will need to bring: -1-1/2" framing chisel(Barr or Robert Sorby are the main brands available) -Poly(20 oz) or wood joiners mallet -Ryoba pull saw 240mm(or at least 9.5" blade) -Closed toed shoes or composite toe boots -Eye and ear protection -Mechanical pencil 7 Helpful tools if you can bring them: -Sawhorses -7-1/4" circular saw -combination square -framing square -hand plane If you want to join the workshop and money is tight we will offer a scholarship to one student. Write us an email about why you want to learn timber framing and title it scholarship. A deposit is required to hold your spot. Please coordinate how you intend to pay the remainder via check or cash.
